What performance can I expect from a 70 h.p. four stroke on a 1988 22' hurricane deck boat?

I just purchased a " modified " 22' Hurricane deck boat. The i/o was removed the transom filled in and it is ready for an outboard. I am hoping that a 70 h.p. would get it on plane and deliver 12-18 knots. The boat will carry no more than 400lbs. in body wait and not much else. My goal is to make this rig as light as possible hence the lower engine weight and reduced torque on the transom.
Has anyone had any experience with lower than average motors on theses boats. Thanks

kgallagher, that doesn't sound like enough hp. What is the max hp rating on the sticker? You will need to get up around 25mph+ just to get that hull on plane. IMHO you need not less than 120hp at minimum and could run as much as 175hp if within specs.

Does a boat originally built for IO have the same transom strength as one built for outboard? If so then you will be much happier with a bigger motor

I agree with FlyingV5...you're going to need a lot more power or you are going to be very unhappy with the performance. 115 hp would be the minimum to consider.
