Throttle operation/gear detents

Quick question on throttle operation. When operating the shift lever the forward gear detent seems to be very slight, making it hard to gauge where the gear engages. This makes it easy to apply more than desired throttle at low speed. The reverse detent is very noticable and "clicks in."
Is this detent a feature of the actual throttle/shift control, or the cables?
On a Mercruiser 5.0mpi - Alpha 1 Gen 2.
