No power to engine tilt or ignition/guages

At times when I attempt to raise the engine I have no power to either the switch...at the engine or the helm. In addition, there is no power to the ignition or any of the guages. Then "mysteriously" after banging around it will begin working again. How is the power wired to both the engine and the boat from the batteries?
