Try Spectrum gelcoat. Their website is [link=http://www.spectrumcolor.com/default_main.asp]http://www.spectrumcolor.com/default_main.asp[/link]. It looks like their re doing their online ordering site but there's an 800 number to call. They supply gelcoat repair kits to match original colors if it's not too big an area. It's usually used for scratches and gouges that aren't too big. It sounds like you have a larger area. Is it possible that it is oxidation from the sun? Several marine products are available for restoring the luster to the gelcoat due to fading. It takes a lot of elbowgrease however. I believe Maguire Wax is one product that works well.
I don't believe there is any clearcoat applied, what you see is the outer thin layer of gelcoat which is applied in a very thin layer to the mold before starting the fiberglass application. This is what gives the hull a smooth, shiny appearance.

I think donmat is correct. There is no clear coat. Most likely what you are seeing is some fading or oxidation of the gelcoat. Before trying to put anything over it, I'd try removing the surface oxidation to restore the finish.
I like this product from Meguires: [link=http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product_detail.asp?T1=MEG+M6732]http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product_detail.asp?T1=MEG+M6732[/link]. I use a random orbital polisher: [link=http://www.amazon.com/Porter-Cable-7424XP-6-Inch-Variable-Speed-Polisher/dp/B002654I46]http://www.amazon.com/Porter-Cable-7424XP-6-Inch-Variable-Speed-Polisher/dp/B002654I46[/link], which makes applying the compound much easier and faster.
