    I chose the Standard Horizon HX851.  They have a strong reputation for quality and reliability, I like having the DSC/GPS feature and it had an extra watt of transmit power over most other handhelds (6 watts vs. 5 watts).  I don't boat in deep ocean, but I do boat on bigger lakes and rivers on occasion, so I didn't necessarily need the power of the 25 watt models.  I did want to maximize the performance of what I had so I took advantage of fabricating an easily removable/pivoting mast antenna.  Icom also makes a quality radio.

    Has anyone ran any wires/cable up inside the gunwale behind the throttle remote control?  From the forward Bimini mount to up under the cockpit(behind the dash)

    Okay another question,  I am pretty sure my gauges are  Yamaha's Command Link which indicates there must be a Command Link bus bar.  My findings thus far indicates this is NMEA 2000 so that one can get a cable and connect a chart plotter to the bus bar and monitor a variety of motor functions, water pump pressure, Engine temperature, and  fuel burn rate being  a few of the items.

    I will be installing a Garmin 741XS within the next few days which does have engine monitoring features, has anyone else done this?  Any issues or concerns to look for when connecting?

    Gee it just seems I have many questions.

    Is there a fresh water drain connection?  I have been reading a bit that there is a fresh water pump, but if one wishes to drain the tank is there a valve one can open to drain the tank? 


    On another item now I am finding out there are NMEA 2000 Blue, Red and black networks.  I am finding Yamaha interface cables for sale which state they will only work on NMEA 200 red networks.  Just what is the difference?  I read someplace that the red and black are the same. any ideas?

    My fresh water tank does not have a drain.  I have to use one of the sprayer/faucets and pump the tank out using them.

    Anyone have any idea how hard it might be to locate the tank and the pump and perhaps put in a tee connector and attach a cutoff vale, then running a piece of line to this cutoff valve so one could drain the tank quite easily without using the pump?

    This might help with the NMEA 2000 "red vs blue" question.  This was posted in 2010.  Here's a link to the source if you want to read more:

    "Were not quite there yet, as manufacturers, for whatever reason, have tended to shy away from standardization in NMEA-2000. For instance, some of the first generation NMEA-2000 hardware used different (and incompatible) connectors, depending on the manufacturer. This is incredible, since a connector is defined in the standard. I believe it was an attempt by manufacturers to force their customers to remain with their brand. However, the manufacturers must realize that going down that path is unwise. This has been tried in the past in other industries, especially in the computer industry, and many of the manufacturers that did so are out of business.
    An example of the first generation incompatible connectors are the Lowrance "Blue" connectors, which will only connect to a Lowrance NMEA-2000 device. Fortunately, most manufacturers have seen fit to finally embrace the standard, and Lowrance's "Red" connectors are NMEA-2000 standardized, and will interconnect with any other vendor's NMEA-2000 connector."

    Now I have learned something as well, perhaps you can answer this, on the outside of the transom about ten inches above and maybe 12 inches to the left above  the brass drain plug orifice, there is another brass drain looking opening about 3/4 inches inside diameter.  Is it some type of transducer? Anyone know what this is?

    Well I believe I have an answer this bronze/brass thing is over a foot long inside the hull and apparently it is connected to the bilge pumps  All I am use to seeing is plastic through hulls.
