EZ, I fish mostly fresh water as well and I do have the 60" shaft. You want the motor to go a minimum of 12" (12" to 18" is the rule) below the surface of the water. My bow sits a bit high at rest (I/O's probably contribute to that effect), so when I measured the distance from the bow to the waterline the 60" length was the right choice for my boat. Just remember you can always adjust a longer shaft to be shallower.

Also, another thought, if your distance is falling kinda in between the 54" & 60" shafts and your still not quite sure which way to go, think about where you are going to store your motor. I store my Terrova in the ski locker. Thank goodness the composite shaft flexes just enough for me to sneak it in. If you're going to use your ski locker to store your motor, measure the hatch opening (add locker length), that dimension might end up making up your mind.

CJ, Still torn between the 54/60. Sunday, weather permitting, I'll have the tape measure in my pocket. won't be bothering you guys any longer over the shaft length. Will put the subject to bed! Was going to pull the trigger & order for the I-Pilot this AM, but will hold off till I'm sure!

Yes, Ski locker has plenty of extra room for the pilot....agreed.

I'll be attacking the battery storage issue next. Where to put the 2 batteries is going to be a challenge & surely will be back here with you guys for experienced input.

    Thanks

Had her on the water today and actually remembered my tape measure. With me on the bow it measured 24" from bow to the water. I think I'm more the good with the 54" shaft. Thanks for the advise guys!

Now for the battery placement! No room for additional 2 batteries in the battery box, only room for 1 extra. Does mounting the pair forward somewhere like under the port lounge make any sense? Since This 2004 GS202 doesn't appear to be prewired for a trolling motor, wiring upfront would be a breeze! Any input is always appreciated.

@EzGoinFlGuy, I think you should be fine to install them there. However there are a few things to consider.

    1. If you have fused connections in that area, ensure they are sealed and/or rated for ignition protection (similar to the fuse holders you've shown in your picture)

    2. Venting. You need to provide some sort of venting into the battery storage compartment. Keep in mind that even sealed batteries have vents that only open when excess pressure builds up inside the battery case in the event of overcharging. So, expulsion of explosive hydrogen gas is still something to consider.

Not meaning to alarm you but definitely two factors to consider if you have the space you're willing to give up in the front port lounge.

Just got some bad news; I may have a lower end issue now. Yesterday noticed grinding from forward to reverse and back. Hadn't noticed it so much the earlier first 2 times out. Talked to the dealer and they say it could be an adjustment or worse. I could be spending my I-pilot $$ on the lower end!

I ran the heck out of the boat all day yesterday by myself just to get familiar with the new to me 202. Everything went flawless, cept the shift grind. Whoa is me. I should have started another thread here, but you guys are pretty in-the-know and may even put a finger on the problem.

    Thanks again Guys,

EZ that's tough to hear. I've heard there are some adjustments that can be made in the lower units as the dealer indicated.

You say grinding. Are you slowly putting it in forward and/or reverse? If so, it will grind. The dog clutch in these lower units in my opinion aren't like a fine lady requiring a gentle touch. :O

They're designed to be shifted into gear quickly. When you do it quickly, does it still grind?

If so, you may be able to have the dealer see if any adjustments can be made. If not, it could potentially be an issue with the clutch however I suspect not since it engages and runs.

Let us know how you make out.

Taking it in this AM. This issue is just starting. Didn't notice it before Sunday's day on the water. Will post results.

I've had several boats (more than 10+) over my 67 years and never a lower unit problem until now. Guess it's my turn!
